The castle of Bayburt
Bayburt Castle, reached by crossing the Zigana and Kop Mountains, is also located on the trade route connecting the Black Sea to the Gulf of Basra. There is a lot of information about the name of the castle, its importance, its splendor and its daily life, which every traveler who follows this road passes through. It is not known exactly who built the castle, which was built on limestone rocks in the north of the city. According to Khorenli Movses, in the period of development of the Bagratis, in the first century, it appears that the children of the ruler who founded the Bagratis, the son of Piurad, Senbad (Asbed), as the head of the cavalry and the commander-in-chief of the western army, were founded 58 years before their own strongholds, Pepert, i.e. Bayburt Castle. The castle was ruled by the Romans, Armenians, Byzantines, Arabs and Commens before passing to the Turks.
