The Hamidiye Mosque
Built in 1895 as a school by order of Sultan Abdulhamit, the building later became a mosque at the request of the Muslim population of the island. The exterior of the mosque, the interior of which is decorated with Chinese paintings, is also remarkable for its elegant workmanship. Next to the door that opens to the prayer stage is a wooden wall clock that shows the times of prayer. The mirrored tunic covering the women's enclosure must be decorated with lead on the outside and vegetation on the inside; the ceiling is equipped with three cast-iron candlesticks. This mosque, which perfectly reflects the architectural style of its time, is a must-see when visiting the Grand Mosque.
