The Double Minaret Madrasah
The Double Minaret Madrasah
The Double Minaret Madrasa is a Seljuk work that has become a symbol of Erzurum. It is generally accepted that it was built in the late 13th century. It is also called Hatuniye Madrasah in the name of the idea that it may have been built by Hundi Hatun, the daughter of the Seljuk Sultan Alaaddin Keykubat, or Padişah Hatun of the Ilhanlı Dynasties. The madrasa, which measures about 35x46 meters, is the most important example of the group of madrassas with two floors, four balconies and an open courtyard. Its courtyard, measuring 26 by 10 meters, is surrounded on all four sides by ravines. Student and teacher rooms are lined up on either side of the courtyard. The madrassa has nineteen rooms on the ground floor and eighteen on the first floor. The square space to the west of the entrance was used as a mosque. The dome, which joins the main porch to the south, with the mummy underneath, has the distinction of being the largest mausoleum among its contemporaries in Anatolia. The dome, with a twelve-cornered body, is covered with a dome on the outside and a dome on the inside. The handle is decorated with decorative ribbons and erasers.
