The Mausoleum of the Emir Sheikh
The Mausoleum of the Emir Sheikh
This tomb of His Eminence Emir Sheikh, who lived during the Abbasid period, managed to maintain its existence in the numerous invasions to which Erzurum was subjected. Although it is not known exactly when the tomb was built, according to Ketencizade Rüştü, it was built in 1179 during the reign of Sultan Mehmet Kızılarslan of Saltukoğlu. The order is Sheikh Hazrat. The tomb is reached by descending a five-step stone staircase through a doorway that opens from inside the mosque. This domed tomb contains three wooden coffins. The main door of the tomb, which opens to the south, is made of stone. The cradle dome of the structure, built of regularly cut stone, is supported by two arches. There is a four-cornered ventilation window right in the middle of the tower.
