Today, Konya is one of the most important cities of the Republic of Turkey with an area of 40813.52 km2 and a population of over 2 million. In 1989, it received the status of a major city. The Neolithic City of Çatalhöyük, located within the province's borders, is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Also, 5 centers within the borders of Konya province (Eşrefoğlu Mosque, Konya - Selçuklu Capital, Anatolian Selçuklu Medreses, Eflatunpınar: Hittite Water Monument and Salt Lake Special Environmental Protection Area) are included in the Provisional List of World Cultural Heritage. In addition, the Mevlevî Semâ Ceremony, which was declared a Masterpiece in 2005 within the framework of the UNESCO Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity Program, was included in the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2008.
