The monument to the martyr Sancaktar Mehmetchik
Atatürk, on August 31, 1922, while touring the battlefield, saw a battalion buried in a pit opened by enemy artillery shells among the martyrs. This holy martyr holds the banner upright with his frozen arm on the ground. The Commander-in-Chief, moved by the sight, orders the purchase of a symbol for the Martyrs' Memorial to be built after the war.
The foundation of this monument was laid by Atatürk on August 30, 1924 in Zafertepe and was opened to the public in 1927. In 1961, by Law No. 220, it was decided to move the Monument to Berberçam Hill, where the incident took place, in 1964 it was removed with the construction of the Victory Monument in Zafertepe ⁇ and moved to the Afyonkarahisar Museum, in 1979 it was built in its current location and opened to the public on August 30, 1979.
