Selimiye Kışlası ilk olarak III. Selim devrinde yeni kurulan Nizâm-ı Cedîd askerleri için kesmetaş bir kaide üzerinde ahşap olarak inşa edildi. Yeniçeriler'in isyanı sonucunda yıkılan bu kışla II. Mahmud devrinde kâgir olarak yeniden inşa edildi. Sultan Abdülmecid devrinde iki defa yenilenen kışlanın dört köşesine yedişer katlı birer kule ilâve edildi. Kırım Savaşı sırasında İngiliz askerlerine tahsis edildi. Modern hemşireliğin kurucusu Florence Nightingale 1854'te kışlaya gelerek yaralı İngiliz askerlerinin tedavisinde görev aldı. Florence Nightingale ve beraberindeki hemşirelerin kaldığı oda günümüzde müzeye dönüştürüldü. Cumhuriyet döneminde farklı amaçlarla kullanıldı. 1959-63 yılları arasında Selimiye Askerî Ortaokulu adı ile askerî ortaokuldu. Selimiye Kışlası günümüzde 1. Ordu Komutanlığı merkez binası olarak kullanılmaktadır. Kışlanın Güney-Doğu kulesinde Selimiye Askerî Ortaokulu Müzesi, Kuzey-Batı kulesinde ise Florence Nightingale Müzesi yer almaktadır.
