One of the most beautiful buildings representing the architecture of the Austro-Hungarian period in Sarajevo is the Town Hall. Opened in 1896 and used for administrative purposes, the building began to serve as the National and University Library of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1949. A fire in the building, which was hit by artillery shells in 1992 during the Bosnian-Herzegovinian War, destroyed the library's huge collection of about 2 million items and severely damaged the building. After the restoration, the building was opened in 2014 and now hosts cultural, artistic and economic activities.
