One of the oldest squares in Istanbul, Beyazıt Square still retains its charm. After the conquest of Istanbul, the first palace was built in this square, but after the construction of the Topkapı Palace, this palace began to be called the Old Palace. There are no surviving remains of the Old Palace, where the Great Governor Sultans or the former king's harem were sent. However, there are many other historical artifacts found in Beyazıt Square. The most imposing of these is undoubtedly the White Mosque. Right next to it is the Serasker Gate from the Ottoman period. This door is nowadays used as the entrance gate of Istanbul University. Other historical sites surrounding the square are the Closed Market and the Market of the Pages.
