The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore
The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore
The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, one of the most important basilicas in the city, was built in the 5th century on the site of an old Pagan temple. It was built in the 19th century. The basilica, which uses many architectural styles in its architecture, is a very original structure.
The Piazza dell'Esquilino, located at the entrance of the building, indicates the pilgrimage route. Inside is the Capella Paolina, which houses the admirable mosaic work entitled "The Coronation of the Virgin".
This place, which hosts colorful celebrations every year on August 5th, should be on the list as one of the places to see.
It also has a legend. It is said that Pope Liberius saw the Virgin Mary in a dream and then woke up and told his dream to his artists. And the artists depicted these narratives on mosaics, and this is how the naves of the basilica were formed.
