The Romans built the ancient hippodrome, originally called Circus Maximus, between the Aventine and Palatine hills. Although it resembles a horse race in the mind, different activities were held in this area in ancient times.

There is also a monument in Piazza Popolo dedicated to Pope V. It was removed from the Circo Massimo during the reign of Sixtus.
