The Obruk Khanate
An example of a khanate established on trade routes during the Anatolian Seljuk period is the Obruk Khanate. Obruk Khan is on the road from Konya to Aksaray. As a plan, it has the classic Seljuk khanate scheme consisting of an open section (courtyard) and an enclosed volume. The entrance section is built in two floors, entering the open space (courtyard) above the inn door on the long axis of the plan. The entrance is filled with dirt. The rooms are illuminated by small windows on the upper floor of the outer façade. To the right of these rooms, which are accessed by stairs from the courtyard, is the mosque with the very simple stone altar and the only stone vault of the Obruk Khan.
