Yumuktepe, which is of particular importance in the world of archaeology and has been continuously inhabited from the Neolithic Age to the present day, is located in the Demirtaş neighborhood, about 1 kilometer northwest of the city center. In 1937, when John Garstang and his team were investigating the site, they decided to excavate the mound after finding Neolithic tools in sections that had been destroyed by the Mufti River to the west of the mound. The excavation work started in the same year was interrupted in 1939. They then resumed scientific excavation work in 1946-1947, but were unable to continue. In addition to the afforestation works carried out by opening terraces on the mound as seen today, there have been destructions that destroyed all the excavation areas and layers due to the floods of the Muftú River that passed by. Again, the destruction was intensified by a series of architectural applications on the mound. When these applications were made, they were used on stones that came out of the mound.
